THE STORY
On September 15, 2014, We, Rick and Pouna, drove from San Diego into Tijuana, Mexico to attempt a rescue of a small dog with a broken leg. We had been given specifics on where this little dog had been seen, and made our way to the location.

It was an extremely hot day and at 11am, most of the dogs were hiding under vehicles. We scoured the blocks around our target area and when we saw a dog under a car, we would offer the dog treats so it would show him or herself. We had coaxed about 10 dogs in the area out from underneath cars, gave them some treats and if we saw they appeared to be fed and uninjured, we moved on. The reality of Mexico is that though there are millions of street dogs, many of these dogs do have owners and they are left to roam the streets anyway. We need to see a dog that is in a desperate situation before we attempt a rescue.

We could not find the dog with the broken leg and we were about to leave the area when Pouna suggested we go to the end of a dusty abandoned street as she thought she saw a dog underneath a vehicle all the way at the end.

When we arrived we saw a dog underneath a taxi. We offered some treats and what came out from under the car was a bit shocking to see at first. It wasn’t the one we came down for, but once we saw this little girl, we knew we were not leaving without her.

We call her Daisy, she may be around 8 months old and a German Shepherd mix. She has many medical problems and she still needs a complete check as this just happened.

100% of the donations goes towards care of the animals.

ABOUT BAJA ANIMAL SANCTUARY
Baja Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit organization founded by American Sunny Benedict in 1997. While down in Rosarito, Mexico on business, she saw all the stray dogs and decided to stay down there and help as many as she could. Today the Baja Animal Sanctuary is home to more than 400 dogs and cats that have been found abandoned, sick, injured and many left for dead on the streets of northern Baja. Whether we find a homeless dog living in a trash pile or an injured dog in traffic, we will attempt the rescue and provide a new life for the animals that need our help.
