So, choosing puppy toys. Don’t get duped by all the cute things at the store. Most of them will just end up being shredded all over your house. Dogs really like to dissect things and pull things apart.
In finding good toys for your dog, I usually suggest hard rubber toys, or toys made of real bone that can be filled. They’re hollow inside, they can be stuffed with food, and they can be stuffed with treats. There are things like Kongs, buster cubes, and hollow bones. These are great.
Kong makes another one called the Wobbler which is terrific. These are things that you can hide whole meals in, really, and let the dog dissect it. So, it serves multiple purposes. It gives the dog something mentally and physically stimulating. It’s an environmental-enrichment tool. It keeps the dog’s mouth busy on something that’s not your furniture or your shoes. These are toys that can keep your dog busy for long periods of time, that are appropriate to chew and can’t be destroyed.
Obviously, some rope toys, tug toys and fetching toys are fine also, but as far as leaving them alone and giving them something to do for extended periods of time, you want to make sure that you have some stuff-able toys, that are hollow, that he can really get addicted to chewing, so that he knows what’s appropriate to chew, versus what’s inappropriate to chew.
We have a tendency to scold our dogs for making mistakes they didn’t realize there were rules for in the first place, so setting them up to succeed, right from the start, is the best way to prevent problems down the road. You can do that with some really good toys, like Kongs and hollow bones. Things like that. Those are just some suggestions for how to pick out good toys for your dog.
