Pups and their mums have a special bond and need to be together and should stay together until the pups are at least eight weeks old.
Sadly, many pups are torn apart from their mothers on cruel puppy farms, where the bitch is bred over and again and the pups kept in terrible conditions.
Many people end up buying from puppy farms or dealers, who have set up a fake home environment, or even brought in a fake mum, to trick puppy buyers into thinking all is well.
If you are thinking about getting a puppy make sure that you always see the pup interacting with its mum.
You should be asking the breeder questions, checking the paperwork and lineage of the pups with the Kennel Club, make sure that the pup is microchipped and that the parent dogs have done the appropriate health checks.
You want to look to see that mum is in good health and has a good temperament, as an indication of how her pups are likely to be.
Visit Discover Dogs on 17 and 18 October at ExCel Exhibition Centre to spend time with more than 3000 dogs and find out more about how to buy the right breed and find the right breeder.
